INDIA ISSUED HER FIRST OFFICIAL POSTAGE STAMPS AS MEANS OF PREPAYMENT OF POSTAGE, ON 1ST OCTOBER 1854. TO MARK THE CENTENARY OF THE EVENT, FOUR POSTAGE STAMPS DEPICTING THE EARLIER AND MODERN MODES OF TRANSPORTATION OF MAIL WERE ISSUED IN FOUR DENOMINATION OF 1 ANNA, 2 ANNAS, 4 ANNAS AND 14 ANNAS.

The currency used on stamps was Rupia, Anna Paisa & Pies

This represented the currency arrangements during the transition period upto the establishment of the Indian Republic. The Monetary System remained unchanged at One Rupee consisting of 192 pies.
