THE NATIONAL SMALL INDUSTRIES FAIR WAS HELD IN NEW DELHI FROM 17TH TO 30TH NOVEMBER 1978. THE FAIR PROVIDED A CLOSE VIEW OF DIFFERENT FACETS OF SMALL INDUSTRIES SECTOR. THIS STAMPS DEPICTING A MACHINE OPERATOR WAS RELEASED TO COMMEMORATE THE OCCASION.

Stamp Information:Small Scale-Industries constitute a vital sector in India?s economy. Small Scale units comprise 75% of the registered factories accounting for nearly 30% of employment and contributing over 40% of industrial production. The respective figures will be even more, if unregistered units are taken into account. Its total contribution to GNP is nearly 13%, which is more than the heavy industries sector. Production of electronics, which is regarded as an index of national economic growth , is heavily concentrated in the small sector. What is of greater significance is that the large industries are heavily dependent on the small units for ancillaries. In some cases finished products on the large scale sector consist of as high a proportion as 80% from the small sector. The National small Industries Fair organised by the Trade Fair Authority of India is the national projection of this vital sector covering the entire gamut of products from sophisticated electronics and modern engineering items to traditional handicrafts and products of the cottage and tiny units including village industries. The Fair is symbolic of Gandhiji?s ?Back to the village? movement and has been organised in accordance with the socio-economic objectives and priorities of the Government. The theme of this Fair is ?Small Industry serves the People?. The display will provide a close view of the different facts of small industry sector, both in State pavilion presenting a composite show. An exclusive export potential of the small and cottage industries. The Indian P & T department is happy to bring out a postage stamp to make the inauguration of this fair.

THIS ISSUE HONOURS UDAY SHANKAR (1900-1977), THE WORLD FAMOUS DANCER AND EXPONENT OF INDIAN FOLK DANCES. A DANCE STANCE OF THIS GREAT DANCER IS DEPICTED IN THIS STAMP.

Stamp Information:Uday Shankar was born on December 8, 1900, in Udaipur. He was the eldest son of Dr. Shyam Shankar Chowdhury, an educationist. Uday spent his childhood at Ghazipur. A truant who hated school, he sneaked away from home to watch a dance and he repeated it at home. Uday Shankar was sent to school at Varanasi and then to the J. J. School of Arts, Bombay. In 1920, he went to England and was admitted to the Royal College of Arts, London, where he tried to master Western painting under Sir William Rothenstein. However, he opted for a dancing career in 1922 under the influence of Anna Pavlova, Europe?s then leading Ballerina. He tried his hand in running a school of dancing at Almora (1939) and at producing a film ?Kalpana?. As a dancer, he was original, as a choreographer, idealistic. He was the first person to present an Indian ballet with an Indian theme, accompanied by a musical score in which no foreign instrument was used. Uday Shankar with his troupe toured extensively in Europe, America and other parts of the world. He can be called one of the great cultural ambassadors of our age. His main achievement was the blending of the Indian classical style with the Western ballet and various folk dances. Much of his inspiration came from Indian mythology and temple sculpture, which he re-created with his own imaginative ideas about dress d?cor and music in its many dimensions. Notable examples of this synthesis were his famous items like ?Shivatandava?, ?Gajasurabadh?, ?Kartikeya?, ?Indra? and ?Labour and Machine?. He passed away on September 26, 1977.

CHAKRAVARTI RAJAGOPALACHARI (1878-1972), WAS NOT ONLY AN ARDENT PATRIOT NOT ALSO A GREAT SOCIAL REFORMER AND EMINENT LITTERATEUR. HE WAS THE FIRST INDIAN GOVERNOR OF INDIA IN 1948. THE BIRTH CENTENARY OF THIS GREAT NATIONAL LEADER WAS COMMEMORATED BY THE ISSUE OF THIS STAMP.

Stamp Information:Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, was born in 1878 in Salem district of Madras. He was educated at the Central College, Bangalore and the Presidency College and Law College, Madras. He joined the Bat in 190 and practiced at Salem till 1919. His association with te freedom movement began in 1906. Fired with the urge to serve the country more devotedly, he gave up the practice and joined Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha campaign in 1919 and freedom movement in 1920. Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was General Secretary of the Indian National Congress from 1921 and a member of its Working Committee from 1922 to 1942 and again during 1946-47 and 1951-54, Between 1921-42 he was imprisoned five times for participating in the freedom movement. In April 1942, he resigned from the Congress on account of differences of opinion. He was Secretary of Prohibition League of India in 1930 and Premier of Madras during 1937-39. He was also Vice-President of Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha for some time. He assisted Mahatma Gandhi in his talks with the late Mr. Jinnah in 1944 and was a Member of the Interim Government during 1046-47 and Governor of West Bengal from August 1947 and June 1948. An elder statesman and a great patriot, Rajaji acted as Governor-General of India in November 1947 and had the unique distinction of being the first Indian Governor General from June 1948 to January 1950. His elevation to the highest office of the country was a recognition of his distinguished services to the country by a grateful nation and a tribute to his outstanding capabilities. He was Minister without portfolio in the Union Cabinet, July-December 1950. Minister of Home Affairs 1950-51 and Chief-Minister of Madras 1952-54. In 1954 he was awarded the highest honour of the land; 'Bharat Ratna' for his great services to the nation. A strong believer in pacifism and an uncompromising critic of nuclear weapons, Rajaji carried on an incessant campaign against the use of atom bombs and was the spokesman of the three-man Indian delegation from Gandhi Peace Foundation to canvass support for the prohibition of nuclear tests. His voice against nuclear weapons was only an outward manifestation of a mind and a heart imbued with spiritual and moral values and boundless love for humanity. Basic values of religion formed the sheet anchor of his life. He wrote a number of books all of which have profound moral significance to the conflict-torn world. He was convinced that civilization based on materialism was self-destructive. The cultivation of moral values alone could provide a durable foundation to civilization. While Rajaji's books Marcus Aurelius and Socrates, the Vedanta, the Bhagwad Gita and the Upanishads, Voice of the Uninvolved, Kambaramayan- Ayodhya Kandam are profound, his Mahabharata and Ramayana are full of beauty and excellence. His book Hinduism- Doctrine and Way of Life is an elaboration of his "Vedanta" and is of special interest to scholars and statesmen of all countries. The crisis of the contemporary world can be overcome only by a more constructive examination and appreciation of the moral and philosophical background of the faiths and practices that have hitherto kept civilization moving towards progress instead of self-destruction. The central theme of this book should encourage all those who are fighting the battle for a civilization governed by Moral Order. He edited Gandhiji's Yong India during the Latter's imprisonment and was the principal contributor to the Swarajya. As an accomplished dialectician, he always had a formula to offer for the most difficult and intricate problem. Paying tribute to C.R. in his Autobiography, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wrote: "His brilliant intellect, selfless character and penetrating powers of analysis have been tremendous assets to our cause." His death on December 25, 1972 has removed from our midst a statesman, a profound thinker and a great patriot. The P & T Department deems it a great honour to bring out a commemorative stamp in memory of this illustrious son of India on his first death anniversary.

Vallathol Narayana Menon (1878-1958) was born on October 16, 1878 in Chennara village near Ponnani in Kerala. He started writing poetry at the age of thirteen. Vallathol’s poetry passed through three distinct stages – the classicism of the early days, the nationalism of the later years and the progressivism of his last days. To give the performing arts of Kerala, especially Kathakali and Mohiniyattam their rightful place, he founded the “Kerala Kalamandalam” at Cheruthuruthy in 1927. It is now a world famous institution, imparting training in classical dance forms. India issued a stamp on him released on 15 /10/1978

Stamp Information:The poetic career of Vallathol Narayana Menon extends from the era of the classical tradition in Malayalam Literature to the modern age of social protest. His poetry stirred the patriotic fervour of the freedom fighters of Kerala. Vallathol was born on October 16, 1878 in Chennara village near Ponnani in Kerala. In contrast to his progressive and revolutionary image in later years, his education was on traditional lines. He studied Sanskrit poetry and grammar and was trained in astrology and the Ayurveda system of medicine. His genius, however, refused to be confined to these narrow limits. He started writing poetry at the age of thirteen. The first major work which brought him into limelight at the age of twenty-seven was his translation from Sanskrit into Malayalam of Valmiki?s Ramayana. Significantly, his last major work was also a translation, that of Rig Veda which he completed a few months before he passed away. His poetry passed through three distinct stage?the classicism of the early days? the nationalism of the later years and the progressivism of his last days. His poems are too numerous to be listed here, but a few names like Shishyanum Makanum, Magdalena Mariam, Kochu Seeta are worth mentioning, as they have made deep impression on the minds of Malayalam readers of yesteryear. Many of his famous lyrical works have been collected and published under the title Sahitya Manjari in thirteen volumes. During the Vaikom temple entry satyagraha, he met Mahatma Gandhi whom he called his guru in a very popular poem he wrote about the Mahatma. His sense of commitment to his country?s freedom made him refuse an award from the then Prince of Wales who was visiting India. The performing arts of Kerala, especially Kathakali and Mohiniyattam which were gradually dying out, were encouraged by him. To give the arts its rightful place he founded the ?Kerala Kalamandalam? at Cheruthuruthy in 1927. it is now a world famous institution, imparting training in classical dance forms. Both in literature and fine arts, Vallathol is one of the best representatives of the cultural renaissance of modern India. He died on March 13, 1958 at the age of 80, full of honours. He had the satisfaction of seeing a new society take shape, a society for the creation of which his poetry had made valuable contributions. The Indian Post and Telegraphs Department feels privileged to issue a commemorative postage stamp in his honour.
