During the next few years, several other companies sprang up, but these companies were restricted to Anglo-Indian girls and were controlled by the headquarters of the Movement in England. By 1915, the movement had spread to Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, etc., and more than 15 companies had been formed, still controlled from London. In the meantime, several independent companies had been formed for Indian girls. The first was 2nd Poona (Bombay State) started in 1916. It was in October, 1916, that the then Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides in India was authorised to adapt the scheme to Indian conditions and to admit Indian girls. The Al India Girl Guides Association was then formed with a constitution of its own and it became full member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1929. This association was amalgamated with the Bharat Scouts and Guides in 1951. The Bharat Scouts and Guides is a unified national organisation - both for boys and girls - and the Guide section is affiliated to the World Association of Girl Guides and Scouts and the Scout Section to the Boy Scouts World Bureau. Stamp Information:The idea of issuing postage stamps originated with Sir Rowland Hill at whose suggestion, the first postage stamp in the world now known as 'Penny Black' was brought out in England on he 6th May 1840. Other countries followed in quick succession. India brought out her first postage stamp. The famed "Scinde Dawks" in 1852. Two years later, in 1854, the first stamp for use all over India was issued. It is not known with certainty when stamp collecting as a hobby actually started but evidently it must have been immediately after the issue of the first postage stamp in 1840. For nearly two decades, stamp collecting as a hobby was confined mostly to schoolboys and enthusiasts who were called uncomplimentary names such as 'Timbromaniacs'. By 1863, however, the hobby had made inroads into the hearts of serious-minded people. They found in stamps, apart from their illustrative and pictorial value, sufficient interest to justify the study of their specialties. They found the history of every design worth facing through the various mutations of shade, paper, watermark and perforation. Thus, stamp collecting took a new trend towards study and grouping of stamps on a scientific basis. It also acquired a reputable and new name of 'Philately' from the combination of the Greek words 'Philos' (fond of) and 'Atelia' (exemption from tax). Philately being a social hobby, it did not take long for clubs and societies to be organised as the interest in philately grew. With the formation of philatelic clubs and societies, the need for exhibiting individual collections by stamp collectors was strongly felt. Thus, started philatelic exhibitions. At first, this was confined to the members of societies and clubs but soon it spread over t national and international fields. On the occasion of 50th anniversary of the first postage stamp, the first International Exhibition was held in London in 1890. Other International Exhibitions at Paris, Hague, Amsterdam, Vienna followed in quick succession. The first International Philatelic Exhibition in U.S.A. was held in 1913. We are now having International Exhibitions practically every year in one country or the other. In addition, National Philatelic Exhibitions are being held in almost every country regularly. In India, Philatelic Exhibitions are known to have been held in the later decade of the last century. An International Postage Stamp Exhibition (Indipex) was orgainsed by the P & T Department in 1954 at the time of the postage stamp centenary. Several competitive exhibitions have been held in India since INDIPEX at various places, such as Bombay, Madras, Calcutta, Banglore, Hyderabad, Trichi, Jullundur, Kanpur etc. The India National Philatelic Exhibition 1970 however is the first of its kind being held in India in recent years. The exhibition is being organised to inculcate public interest in philately, particularly in the younger generation to encourage stamp collecting as a profitable hobby with great educational interest and promote the study of serious aspects of the hobby by advanced collectors. A Philatelic Exhibition, like any other exhibition, will admittedly bring more and more new comers and enthusiasts to the hobby. The exhibition will display some of the rare and valuable collections not only of the Department but of the various collectors and philatelists which have never been seen before by many collectors. These will include Indian classics, proofs and essays of many of its issues. Indian stamps used abroad, Indian cancellations, Indian States (Convention and Feudatory), Indian Air Mails, postal stationary, and literature. A good collection of stamps of other foreign countries will also be shown by reputable collectors and philatelists in India. The Thematic Section of the Exhibition will be really eye-catching with themes like animals, wild life, flowers, scouts, space flight, evolution of flying wings on stamps etc., training of family planning, Red Cross, and various other subjects. On this great occasion, the P & T Department is happy to bring out two special stamps of denominations 20 paise and Re. 1/- to commemorate the India National Philatelic Exhibition, 1970 to be held from the 23rd December, 1970 to 6th January, 1971 on the themes of stamp collecting. In addition to usual First Day Covers, which are being brought out, the Department has arranged to provide separate cancellations on each day at the site of the Exhibition P.O.

SWAMI SHRADDHANAND (1856-1926) WAS A GREAT ASCETIC, PATRIOT AND FOUND OF GURUKUL KANGRI, HARIDWAR  HE WAS A GREAT FREEDOM FIGHTER AND IN THE WORDS OF MAHATMA GANDHI-“HE LIVED A HERO AND DIED AS A HER’. THIS STAMP FEATURES IS PORTRAIT.

Stamp Information:Among the few who were eminent in building our nation in the later part of the 19th century and the early years of the twentieth, was Mahatma Munshi Ram, known as Swami Shraddhanand. As a valiant warrior of the war of independence  Swami Shrakkhanandji presents a living portrait of bravery and sacrifice. Swami shaddanand was born at Talwan (Jullundur) in 1913(Vikram Era) corresponding to 1856 A.D. in a well-known and well-to-do khatri family. His father, Shri Nanak Chand was in the service of the East India Company. Swamiji was originally given the name of 'Brihaspati', but later he was called Munshi Ram by his father. This name continued to be in vogue till he was initiated into 'Sanyas'. He was youngest in the family. His school education began at Varanasi and ended at Lahore after passing the examination for pleadership  He was married to Shrimati Shiva Devi. His wife died when he was 35 years old leaving behind her two sons and two daughters. Munshi Ram had started luge as a Naib Tehsildar but he relinquished this post after a short time as he respect. Later, he practiced as a pleader at Phillaur and Jullundur but gave up this lucrative profession also when the call came from Swami Dayanand Saraswati to serve the Arya Samaj an appeal that he found irresistible. He founded the Gurukul ar Kangri at Haridwar, a unique seat of learning in keeping with the ideals of the Vedic seers. The underlying idea was to produce good and disciplined citizens in the community completely imbued with ancient Vedic ideals and a national outlook. This is the institution which Ramsay MacDonald visited and where he likened Munshi Ram to a biblical prophet walking the shores of Galilee. This is also the institution towards which Mahatma Gandhi was first drawn while he was in South Africa and where he stayed first on his return to India. If was this institution which conferred on Gandhiji the title of the 'Mahatma'. In the year 1917, he became a 'Sanyasi', assuming the name 'Shradhanand' and making Delhi his permanent abode instead of Gurukul. In Delhi, he founded a number of institutions aimed at social, moral and cultural betterment and upliftment of the people  especially of the so-called 'untouchables'. He also founded two prominent dailies: the Urdu 'Tej' and the Hindi 'Arjun'. During the national struggle for independence in the year 1919, he plunged headlong into the agitation under the leadership of Gandhiji. He took a leading part in infusing life into the people and organised 'hartals' and protests against the Rowlatt Act enacted by the British Government. When Gandhiji was arrested, Swami Shraddhanandji led a protest march in the city. When a soldier threatened to fire upon the crowd, the ascetic bared his breast and dared him to shoot. Such was the courage of Swamiji. During the period of excitement, this valiant Arya Sanyasi, without any distinction of caste or creed, served the citizens of Delhi. The Muslims considered him as their own elder brother. Swamiji was accorded the unique honor of preaching to the Muslims from the pulpit of the greatest and the most famous mosque of India, the Delhi Jama Masjid. When the Punjab was writhing under the pains of atrocities by the British Government under martial law, it was Swami Shraddhanand who came forward to make arrangements for the Congress session at Amritsar. In this historic session, he introduced the programme for eradication of untouchability which was adopted. He always stood in the front line of the Arya Samaj movement and made the Arya Samaj a power and contributed to its popularity by his disinterested work and exemplary practical life. His towering and inspiring personality was a source of eternal inspiration. He believed in Hindu-Muslim unity from the very beginning and was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. As a social worker, he was always engrossed in ameliorating the conditions of the poor and the down-trodden. God willed for him a martyr's death and while still on his sick bed, he died at the hands of a misguided assassin in the year 1926 on 23rd December His message from his sick bed was, "India's salvation lay in abiding Hindu-Muslim unity". In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "He lived a hero and died a hero". His life was symbol of renunciation and penance. His field of action was limitless. The Posts and Telegraphs Department deems it a great privilege to bring out special commemorative stamp in honor of Swami Shraddhanandji , a noble soul and fearless patriot, and one of the greatest sons of India.
