MADAN MOHAN MALAVIYA WAS A MULTIFACETED PERSONALITY REMEMBERED NOT JUST FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE FREEDOM STRUGGLE BUT ALSO TO EDUCATION, JOURNALISM AND SOCIAL REFORM. BORN IN ALLAHABAD ON DECEMBER 25, 1861 TO A FAMILY RESPECTED FOR THEIR SCHOLARSHIP MADAN MOHAN WAS A DILIGENT DURING HIS YEAR OF SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION. MALAVIYA PARTICIPATED IN THE ANNUAL CONGRESS SESSIONS REGULARLY FROM 1886 AND STEADILY ACQUIRED THE STATUS OF A LEADER AND AN OPINION MAKER. AS HIS VISIBILITY IN PUBLIC LIFE INCREASED, HE WAS ELECTED TO THE PRINCIPAL LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL IN 1902 AND TO THE IMPERIAL LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL IN 1909 ALSO HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS IN 1909. MALAVIYA WAS COMMITTED TO THE NEED FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AND REFORM IN THE COUNTRY. HE WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST TO APPRECIATE THE ROLE OF NEWSPAPERS, PARTICULARLY IN INDIAN LANGUAGES, IN THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC. MADAN MOHAN MALAVIYA AS RIGHTLY SUMMED UP BY JAWAHARLAL NEHRU, WAS A GIANT AMONG MEN, AND ONE OF THE FOUNDATION-LAYERS OF INDIAN NATIONALISM. India Post issued a postage stamp today to commemeorate 150^th Birth Anniversary ( 25 December 2011 ) of Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya

Madan Mohan Malaviya ( 1861 – 1946 ) was an Indian educationist, and freedom fighter notable for his role in the Indian Independence movement. Later in life, he was also addressed as ‘Mahamana’.

He was the President of the Indian National Congress on four occasions. He was founder editor of two nationalist weeklies called Hindustan ( in Hindi ) and the Indian Union ( in English ). He was the president of the Indian National Congress in 1909  and in 1918. He later founded Banaras Hindu University, commonly known as BHU, a prominent institution of learning in India today.

On his 150^th birth anniversary ( i.e. 25^th Dec, 2011 ), Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh announced  that a Centre for Malaviya Studies well be set up at the Banaras Hindu University apart from establishment of scholarships and education related awards in his memory.

Malviya Nagar in Allahabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Bhopal and Jaipur are named after him. A Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) at Jaipur is named afer him. Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College in Gorakhpur, UP is also named after him.
