18TH FEBRUARY 1911 WAS AN IMPORTANT DAY IN THE POSTAL HISTORY. ON THAT DAY HENRI PIQUET, A FRENCH AVIATOR, TOOK OFF IN A HUMBER-SOMMER BIPLANE FROM THE INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL EXHIBITION GROUNDS ON THE RIGHT BANK OF YAMUNA, CARRYING WITH HIM A BAG CONTAINING 6500 LETTERS AND POSTCARDS. HE CROSSED OVER TO THE LEFT BANK AND DROPPED THE BAG AT NAINI RAILWAY STATION. A SPECIAL POSTMARK WAS USED TO CANCEL THE STAMPS AFFIXED TO THESE LETTERS. THIS MARKED THE VERY FIRST INSTANCE IN THE WORLD WHEN MAIL WAS CARRIED BY AIR. TO COMMEMORATE THE GOLDEN JUBILEE OF THIS HISTORIC EVENT A SET OF THREE STAMPS WAS ISSUED ON 18TH FEBRUARY, 1961 FEATURING THE SPECIAL POSTMARK AND THE HUMBER-SOMMER BIPLANE OF 1911 AND THE MODERN JET AIRLINER ‘BOEING 707’ TRANSPORTING MAIL ALL OVER THE WORLD.
